Life insurance

What is life insurance and how does it work?

Here are some common terms to know.  These factors can impact the pricing and cost of life insurance:

Premium

This is the amount you pay the life insurance company for your policy. For most policies, you can pay premiums monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. Some permanent policies can be paid up in as few as 8 years, while others have longer or lifetime premium periods.

Death benefit

Also called face value, this is the amount guaranteed to your beneficiaries at your death. The higher the death benefit, the higher the policy cost. Some policies offer a death benefit that increases over time. Loans or surrenders of the policy can reduce the death benefit.

Premium rate class

The price for your life insurance, or premium, is determined by your age at policy issuance and your rate class. Factors influencing rate class include family medical history, current health, and tobacco use. Younger, healthier individuals typically pay lower premiums.

Underwriting

This process involves completing an application and giving the insurance company access to your medical information. It may also require a brief medical exam. The collected information is used to determine coverage eligibility and rate class.
