Life insurance
Here are some common terms to know. These factors can impact the pricing and cost of life insurance:
Premium
Death benefit
Premium rate class
Underwriting
Did you know that people routinely overestimate the cost of life insurance? More often than not, it's less than you may think.

There are two general types of life insurance:

Term life insurance
Designed to provide coverage for a specific period of time, such as 10, 20, or 30 years.
Pros to consider
- Often the most affordable option.
- The most popular policies have premiums that stay level.
Cons to consider
- Doesn’t cover your entire lifetime.
- When the initial term period expires, if you still need coverage you may be able to renew your policy (likely at higher premiums) or apply for a new one.
Permanent life insurance
Designed to provide coverage for your entire lifetime. Includes whole life insurance, universal life insurance, and variable life insurance.
Pros to consider
- Many policies build cash value over time.
- You can borrow from your policy for many different reasons, including to help pay for college, supplement your retirement income, or provide cash for emergencies.
Cons to consider
- Generally has higher premiums.
- Tapping a policy's cash value can reduce the death benefit, increase the risk of the policy lapsing, and lead to tax liability if it terminates before the insured's death.
Many life insurance policies offer additional options, sometimes called “riders.” These may be available at an additional cost.
Think about your current and future needs, while exploring these other features.
