MassMutual encourages its staff to “self-select” pro bono opportunities that speak to their passions. One example is the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program, an opportunity spearheaded by an investigator in MassMutual’s Investigations Unit.
Through no fault of their own, children who have been abused or neglected may find themselves involved in the court system. A judge appoints a CASA to be a Guardian ad litem who represents the child’s best interests.
The CASA’s role is to gather information and make recommendations to the judge so the child doesn’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system. A CASA stays with the case until it is closed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home.
The CASA program is not driven by budgets or regulations or what an organization thinks should happen. It’s about putting a child’s needs first. For a vulnerable child, their CASA is a reliable adult presence they can count on.
