Mark Burson is the general agent of MassMutual Oklahoma, a general agency of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual)
Mark joined MassMutual as career agent in 1994 in Wichita, Kansas, after a successful career in retail men’s clothing. A close friend had urged him to switch careers for years, and once he did, there was no looking back.
“I enjoyed retail because I loved working with people. But with MassMutual, I could build a client base of my choosing, and that appealed to me enormously.”
From the beginning, Mark had a passion for family-owned businesses. He noticed the struggles families experienced as they worked to pass their businesses on to new generations. So he earned the Certified Family Business Specialist designation and helped to develop workshops and marketing programs to motivate business owners to plan.
In 1996, he was named assistant general agent in the Oklahoma agency, where he helped build a strong alliance program that assisted agents in developing relationships with banks, accounting firms and law firms.
“We realized that these entities knew some of the issues their clients faced with planning, but didn’t know where to send their clients for help. So we forged symbiotic relationships with CPAs, attorneys and banks. This program is still used nation-wide today.”
In 2003, Mark accepted a position with the home office in Springfield, MA. He served in a variety of roles until 2007, when he was appointed general agent of MassMutual Oklahoma.
Mark is a graduate of Oklahoma State University. He is married to Teresa and together they have five children and three grandchildren.
