For more than 25 years, Ivan Illán has pursued his enthusiasm and vision for innovative methods of managing money. Beginning at the age of 12, when he asked his father to turn over his college fund, he developed his first investment plan. Such early interest was inspired by his grandfather, Jose M. Illán, the former Undersecretary of the Treasury of the Castro Revolutionary Government, who under threat of execution, fled Cuba, to eventually lead World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank initiatives in South and Central America.
Illán's professional career began in 1996 with investment banking firm, Nuveen Investments, in Chicago, where he learned how Wall Street's product development and financial product distribution mechanism works. Working mainly with client firms Merrill Lynch, UBS, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, and Wells Fargo, he pioneered institutional relationship reporting systems. In 1998, Nuveen relocated him to their Southern California office, where his distribution efforts were highlighted by a record-breaking ($2 Billion) NYSE IPO.
In 2000, Illán founded (ming)Consulting Inc., an investment banking consultancy formed to serve the distribution goals of investment management firms in the U.S. and Canada, working in Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto. During this time, he had successfully introduced one of the first Canadian Royalty Trusts and Covered Call Writing ETF's to the U.S. financial advisor market, an industry which now boasts more than $150 Billion in AUM.
In 2003, Illán shifted his knowledge and experience to benefit individual investors. He first served as Vice President at Fisher Investments, a $50Billion wealth manager founded by Forbes columnist, Kenneth L. Fisher. Then in January 2005, Illán joined Capstone Financial Partners in Los Angeles, a General Agency of Massachusetts Mutual Life
Insurance Company (MassMutual). Since joining MassMutual, he has built the largest Assets Under Management practice within the MassMutual Trust Company, FSB, and later formed Aligne Wealth Preservation & Insurance Group to offer mentorship, training, and joint-work to registered representatives seeking specialty support in trust and wealth management services.
His recognition includes: Leaders Club, Blue Chip Council, Blue Chip Circle, and from the MassMutual Trust Company, FSB; Crystal Club Award and Trust Excellence Award. Illán is also frequent contributor to Financial Advisor, Registered Rep, and Dow Jones, as well as, interviewee on The Wealth Channel by The American College.
Illán has a B.S. in Finance and a B.A. in Philosophy from Boston College. He holds FINRA registrations 7, 63, 65, 24, & 53, CA Insurance Lic. #0E72008. He also holds the Institute of Business and Finance’s Certified Fund Specialist designation. He is philanthropically involved in the fostering of contemporary art as a MOCA Partner at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; as well as, sits on the Board of Directors of Step Up On Second Inc., providing economic perspective on the benefits from ending homelessness due to mental illness in Los Angeles County.
