"I come from a numbers family," says Joshua Harper. "My dad is an actuary, my sister is a CPA and my mom is an accountant!" And although he always had an aptitude for mathematics, he never planned to work in the financial services industry.
Joshua's math ability earned him a scholarship to the University of Georgia, where he graduated with dual degrees in Economics and French. His original intent was to go into international trade. After shadowing a financial advisor and interviewing at a number of financial services firms, Joshua decided to pursue a career in financial planning.
As a financial planner with WealthMD, Joshua enjoys working with residents and physicians on adopting a big picture approach to personal finances. "In general, I feel that people are scared to talk about money," he says. "I like to think that through my work I can help clients make important financial decisions in an objective and informed manner."
Joshua recalls an entrepreneurial childhood, which helped shape his own money values. He considers himself a saver. Joshua finds that his perspective helps him advise clients who are looking for a strategic plan to free them of debt acquired over years of training. "I want my clients to know that I care about getting them started on a solid footing," Joshua says. "It's incredibly gratifying to hear that a client is doing better financially because of the work we're doing together."
Joshua is currently pursuing continuing education to obtain the Certified Financial Planner(tm) designation. He splits his time seeing clients in WealthMD's Atlanta offices and in Augusta, where he also teaches as part of the firm's Business of MedicineTM lecture series.
In his free time, Joshua loves to sail. He also likes to golf and travel - preferably by boat! Joshua is active in the French American Chamber of Atlanta, and is a volunteer presenter with Junior Achievement, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating students about entrepreneurship and personal finance.
Joshua lives in Atlanta with his wife Laura and their two dogs.
