Company Named A Best Place to Work by HRC
(Springfield, MA) - The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced this week that Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) scored 100 percent on its Corporate Equality Index (CEI), earning a place on the CEI 2014 Best Places to Work List.
HRC, the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans, annually surveys corporations that opt in using the CEI, its national benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices related to LGBT employees. For 2014, MassMutual scored 100 percent, one of only 53 Fortune 100 companies that scored the top rating, has been named a Best Place to Work.
The CEI process evaluates companies based on equal employment opportunity, LGBT-friendly benefits, employee support, public engagement and responsible citizenship and assigns a rating to each.
Results are compiled across all participating companies and published annually, indicating the strides that corporate America has made in providing workplace equality to all employees.
“The 100 percent rating from the CEI reinforces the ongoing success that MassMutual has achieved in making our company an employer of choice in the LGBT community, one that encourages employees to bring their whole selves to work,” said Mike Fanning, executive vice president, MassMutual and executive sponsor of the company’s LGBT employee resource group, PRIDE. “As a result, we are a more innovative company and ultimately a more successful one,” he added.
MassMutual supports the LGBT community in various ways, beginning internally with sponsorship of its thriving PRIDE employee resource group and in the local community with sponsorship of the Northampton, Mass., “NoHo” Pride Parade, the Western Massachusetts AIDS Foundation, the Hartford Gay & Lesbian Health Collective and the Hartford Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Nationally MassMutual sponsors the NGLCC (National Gay and Lesbian Chambers of Commerce), Out and Equal Workplace Advocates, GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network), and the upcoming 2014 Gay Games in Cleveland next summer. The company also worked on and was one of the first to join the historic “friend of the court” brief that was filed in the U. S. Supreme Court urging the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and is a member of the Human Rights Campaign Business Coalitions for Benefits Tax Equity and for Repealing DOMA.
