MassMutual Sponsors Free Summer Legal Institute for Springfield Students

(Springfield, MA) – Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) and Just The Beginning Foundation (JTBF) are teaming up to offer a new free summer program called the Springfield Summer Legal Institute (SLI) for Springfield high school students on July 8-12, 2013.

The program aims to provide students with a week full of hands-on experience exploring the legal system and what it takes to become a top-notch lawyer. Held at Western New England University School of Law, up to 50 students will spend five days participating in mock trials, meeting local attorneys, practicing negotiation skills and attending workshops on college readiness and business networking. The program also includes a Federal Courts day, which will take place at the United States Courthouse in Springfield and will include a panel of United States and Massachusetts judges.

“The Federal Court has a history of helping to engage youth in opportunities to learn about the justice system,” said Senior District Judge Michael Ponsor. “We hope students in Springfield will consider this wonderful program.”

Just The Beginning Foundation (JTBF) is a nonprofit service organization which seeks to develop and nurture an interest in the legal profession among young people from underrepresented groups and to support their continued advancement, with a long term goal of increasing diversity in the federal courts and the legal profession as a whole.

“We are thrilled to be working with Just the Beginning Foundation to bring this program to our community,” said Mark Roellig, MassMutual’s General Counsel. “MassMutual views diversity and inclusion as key to our long-term success, so JTBF’s goal of increasing diversity in the legal profession made them an ideal partner for us in our community outreach efforts.”

As part of MassMutual’s Career Pathways educational program for area students and its pro bono legal program, the company provided a $25,000 grant to JTBF to bring the Summer Legal Institute program to Springfield. Members of MassMutual’s legal department and other local attorneys will also participate in the program as volunteers throughout the week.

The Springfield Summer Legal Institute is open to Springfield high school students ranging from incoming 9th graders through 12th graders (current 8th – 11th graders). The program is FREE to students, with public transportation passes available to students who express a need. Admissions are granted on a rolling basis. Space is limited, so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Applications are available at
