Diversity & Inclusion

We believe diversity includes the broadest possible range of cultures, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, while inclusion means creating an environment where all people and ideas are valued. Our goal is to welcome everyone — customers, employees, suppliers and visitors alike. Our passion for diversity and inclusion is not only about doing the right thing; it also helps us achieve our purpose to help people secure their future and protect the ones they love.

    Together, We're Stronger

We received a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index, earning a place on the CEI 2018 Best Places to Work List for the eighth time in the last decade. We’re recognized as a noteworthy company for diversity by DiversityInc, and our commitment to the development and advancement of women continues to make us a highly-rated by the National Association for Female Executives. Diversity at Every Level

For diversity to live across an organization, it also needs to live at every level. That’s why we actively pursue workforce diversity, including in our boardroom. Forty percent of our Board of Directors is comprised of women and people of color, making it one of the most diverse groups in the industry and among FORTUNE® 500 companies.

We place a strong emphasis on relationship-building activities, like engaging diverse employees in mentoring and networking opportunities and efforts that drive business impact (Check out the opportunities). Our Business Resource Groups (BRGs) are internal diversity and inclusion champions who support recruitment, community outreach, awareness and education, brand recognition, marketing, retention and professional development. We currently have eight national BRGs representing African Americans,  Asians, Latinos, members of the LGBT community, individuals with disabilities and their caregivers, armed forces members, veterans and military family members, young professionals and women leaders.

    Serving a Diverse Marketplace

We’re in business to help people secure their future and protect the ones they love. And as customers, policyowners and families become more diverse, so is the team of MassMutual professionals serving them.

We have a comprehensive diversity recruitment strategy that reaches out to Asian, Hispanic/Latino, African American, women, LGBT, veteran and disability-focused strategic partners to help support recruitment. We also:

    • Partner with diverse, external organizations that hold seminars and educational sessions for specific market segments.
    • Create targeted financial information for specific cultural groups.
    • Commission research including the multi-year “State of the American Family” study, which explores the changing definitions and dynamics of families, as well as how factors like ethnicity and income affect family decision making around finances. The findings of the study are used to help provide people with the information and guidance they need to make responsible financial decisions.

Strengthening Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

We continue to receive external recognition for our policies and programs that seek to create a diverse and inclusive environment.

And while we’re proud of our achievements, we know our work to address inequities and further our progress is never done.  Our commitment to getting better is why we’ve signed onto initiatives like the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion and Paradigm for Parity and participate in the Boston Women’s Workforce Council wage gap report. Through these initiatives, we’re joining businesses across the nation seeking to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace through education, the engagement of underrepresented groups, and gender parity. It’s all part of our longstanding commitment to do what’s right for our customers, our workforce, and our communities.
