Diversity & Inclusion

We believe diversity includes the broadest possible range of cultures, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, while inclusion means creating an environment where all people and ideas are valued. Our goal is to welcome everyone — customers, employees, suppliers and visitors alike. Our passion for diversity and inclusion is not only about doing the right thing; it also helps us achieve our purpose to help people secure their future and protect the ones they love.

    Together, We're Stronger

By valuing people for who they are, how they think and what they bring to the table, we’ve become a stronger, more innovative company. We’re proud to be recognized for our leadership and success in this area. We received a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index, the fifth time since 2008 we’ve achieved the highest rating.

DiversityInc. has named us to their 25 Noteworthy Companies list every year since 2011, and to their list of “Top 10 Companies for LGBT Employees” for the first time in 2014, ranking number three. And the National Association for Female Executives has named us a Top 50 Company for Executive Women. Our focus on diversity and inclusion isn’t limited to our headquarters or offices. We make an equally strong effort to connect with all of our customers in the communities we live and work in.

    Diversity at Every Level

For diversity to live across an organization, it also needs to live at every level. That’s why we actively pursue workforce diversity, including in our boardroom. Nearly 50 percent of our Board of Directors is comprised of women and people of color, making it one of the most diverse groups in the industry and among FORTUNE® 500 companies.

We place a strong emphasis on relationship-building activities, like engaging diverse employees in mentoring and networking opportunities and efforts that drive business impact. Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are internal diversity and inclusion champions who support recruitment, community outreach, awareness and education, brand recognition, marketing, retention and professional development. We currently have nine national ERGs representing African Americans,  Asians, Latinos, members of the LGBT community, individuals with disabilities and their caregivers, armed forces members, veterans and military family members, young professionals and women leaders.

    Serving a Diverse Marketplace

We’re in business to help people secure their future and protect the ones they love. And as customers, policyowners and families become more diverse, so is the team of MassMutual professionals serving them.

We have a comprehensive diversity recruitment strategy that reaches out to Asian, Hispanic/Latino, African American, women, LGBT, veteran and disability-focused strategic partners to help support recruitment. We also:

    • Partner with diverse, external organizations that hold seminars and educational sessions for specific market segments.
    • Create targeted financial information for specific cultural groups, including "The Basics" videos in Spanish, Korean, Mandarin Chinese and Asian-Indian versions.
    • Commission research including the multi-year “State of the American Family” study, which explores the changing definitions and dynamics of families, as well as how factors like ethnicity and income affect family decision making around finances. The findings of the study are used to help provide people with the information and guidance they need to make responsible financial decisions.

We're committed to being a responsible and contributing member in the places we live and work.
