Mutual Impact: An Employee-driven Community Investment Program

MassMutual Financial Group launched Mutual Impact, an employee-driven community investment program in 2015. Its goal: to deepen employee engagement, build direct relationships with community partners and harness our collective impact by pooling our time, talent and dollars in support of deserving nonprofits. MassMutual Foundation matches all employee contributions dollar-for-dollar, and 100 percent of funds raised go directly to the nonprofit community.

Mutual Impact is as much about the collective donation of time, talent and passion as it is about dollars. As part of the annual grant application process, nonprofits are asked to outline their volunteer needs in addition to their funding requests. MassMutual employees are invited to volunteer with grantees through traditional event-based and skills-based projects. These opportunities may be site-specific or virtual, offering a range of support to our nonprofit partners.

In 2017, the generosity of our employees combined with a MassMutual Foundation match enabled Mutual Impact to give out over $1.1 million in grants to 21 nonprofits working to move the needle on key challenges in the communities where we work.

Selecting the causes where we will focus our giving and volunteer efforts for the next several years was the first step in the Mutual Impact process.

In 2015, a group of employees reached out to nonprofits in communities where we operate – Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts, Enfield, Connecticut, Memphis, Tennessee, and Phoenix, Arizona – to understand the challenges in these locations, and to identify which ones Mutual Impact would be best suited to address. Our team also researched a national cause that we could support through our employee network, regardless of office location.

MassMutual employees were presented with a short list of causes to provide a better understanding of the challenges faced by the community, and were asked to select the cause(s) that they feel passionate about. The cause(s) in each location receiving the greatest employee support became the focus of Mutual Impact for the next several years.

Our current areas of focus are:

Grant Applications

While causes are selected every several years, the grant application process and selection of nonprofit organizations that will receive a Mutual Impact grant takes place annually. Nonprofit organizations being invited to apply will be contacted and sent a direct link to apply.
