Mutual ImpactSM

MassMutual Financial Group launched Mutual Impact, an employee-driven community investment program in 2015. Its goal: to more deeply engage employees, build direct relationships with community partners and harness our collective impact by pooling our time, talent and dollars in support of deserving nonprofits. MassMutual Foundation matches all employee contributions dollar-for-dollar, and 100 percent of funds raised go directly to the nonprofit community.

Our inaugural Mutual Impact campaign was a success! The generosity of our employees combined with a MassMutual Foundation match is enabling us to give out $1.1 million in grants to 21 nonprofits working to move the needle on key challenges in the communities where we work.

Selecting the causes where we will focus our giving and volunteer efforts for the next several years was the first step in the Mutual Impact process.

In 2015, a group of employees reached out to nonprofits in communities where we operate – Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts, Enfield, Connecticut, Memphis, Tennessee, and Phoenix, Arizona – to understand the challenges in these locations, and to identify which ones Mutual Impact would be best suited to address. Our team also researched a national cause that we could support through our employee network, regardless of office location.

MassMutual employees were presented with a short list of causes to provide a better understanding of the challenges faced by the community, and were asked to select the cause(s) that they feel passionate about. The cause(s) in each location receiving the greatest employee support became the focus of Mutual Impact for the next several years.

Our current areas of focus are:

    Grant Applications

While causes are selected every several years, the grant application process and selection of nonprofit organizations that will receive a Mutual Impact grant takes place annually. Nonprofit organizations that meet Mutual Impact giving guidelines are invited to apply for a Mutual Impact grant through our online grant application.

    Employee Giving Campaign

The annual Mutual Impact Employee Giving Campaign takes place in the October time frame at all MassMutual locations and serves as the program's primary fundraising source.

During the campaign, employees can make a one-time donation or ongoing pledge and the MassMutual Foundation will match all employee donations dollar-for-dollar, with 100 percent of employee dollars going to support the nonprofit organizations selected during the nonprofit selection process.

    Choosing Nonprofit Partners

Grant submissions are reviewed by Employee Councils and are narrowed down to a list of finalists that Mutual Impact can most effectively support. Finalists are then presented to employees through the nonprofit selection survey and at ’Pitch Day’ events during the giving campaign. During this time, employees select which nonprofits they feel most passionate about supporting through our collective donations of time, talent, passion and dollars. At the close of the selection period, the nonprofit organizations in each location that receive the greatest employee support will receive Mutual Impact grants.

    Volunteer with Nonprofits

Mutual Impact is as much about the collective donation of time, talent and passion as it is about dollars.

As part of the annual grant application process, nonprofits are asked to outline their volunteer needs in addition to their funding requests. MassMutual employees are invited to volunteer with grantees through traditional event-based and skills-based projects. These opportunities may be site-specific or virtual and will start in 2016.
