JEROME (JERRY) S. GOLDEN, PRESIDENT
INCOME MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES DIVISION
null

Jerome (“Jerry”) S. Golden, regarded as one of the financial services industry’s leading innovators in the retirement income arena, is President of the Income Management Strategies Division and a Corporate Vice President of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. During his career, Golden has been recognized as one of the insurance industry’s leading inventors and more recently has led research for MassMutual that challenges long-held conventional wisdom within the retirement income planning space. Among his accomplishments are the design and/or origination of many of the guaranteed benefit rider concepts featured today in the variable annuity market.

At MassMutual and previously at Golden Retirement Resources, Inc. (“GRR”), which MassMutual acquired in 2005, Golden and his team developed a patent-pending platform for converting retirement savings into retirement income. This program was launched in 2005 as MassMutual’s Retirement Management Account, an integrated income planning and management program that helps address the unique financial issues of retirement, including the need to receive secure lifetime income benefits, maintain purchasing power over time, and be able to adjust to life events.

Golden also directed a research study demonstrating that incorporating a fixed income annuity in a hypothetical retirement income account yielded greater long-term wealth for an investor—along with more income security—than a portfolio of equity and bond investments alone. The study, which could have substantial implications for the retirement planning of millions of retiring Baby Boomers and the financial services professionals who advise them, further suggests that retirees can build more wealth, address purchase rate risk, and enjoy greater flexibility by making incremental purchases of annuity income benefits with assets transferred from mutual fund model portfolios over time - a process called "annuity laddering."

Golden was previously an Executive Vice President of The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, the principal insurance subsidiary of AXA Financial, where he led Equitable’s entry into its now industry leading sales of variable annuities. As head of Equitable’s Product Management and Marketing Group, his responsibilities included management and marketing of Equitable’s Income Manager series of products, as well as product management for all other Equitable life and annuity products.

Previously, he was President of BT Variable, originally named the Golden Financial Group, which he founded in 1987. Golden Financial Group and then BT Variable were active in developing, administering and issuing innovative variable annuity and variable life products. This group, including the insurance subsidiary Golden American Life, is now part of ING.

Golden’s background also includes executive positions with Monarch Life’s variable insurance subsidiary, Monarch Resources. Inc, which achieved a 60 percent market share in variable life insurance in the mid-1980’s. Prior to joining Monarch Resources in 1979, Golden was with Equitable where he was instrumental in the company’s development of Equitable Variable Life Insurance Company (EVLICO) and spearheaded the introduction of the first variable life insurance products in the U.S.

Golden has appeared on CNNfn, Fox News, and Bloomberg Radio, and he and his research have been featured in many leading financial publications, such as Financial Planning, Investment News, and others, as well as numerous consumer-oriented publications and daily newspapers.

Golden holds a B.A. degree from the University of Michigan and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

He and his family reside in Scarsdale, New York.
