MassMutual White Paper Reveals Behaviors and Attitudes About Saving for Retirement
Report Explores Trends and Offers Solutions to Overcome Inertia
June 7, 2006
(SPRINGFIELD, Mass.) - MassMutual Retirement Services has published a white paper entitled, A Behavioral Approach to Retirement Planning: Automation, Personalization and Engagement. Co-authored by MassMutual's director of behavioral communication and research, Alison Salka, Ph.D., and vice president, Ian Sheridan, the white paper explores trends in retirement saving behavior and offers a program of suggested solutions based on behavioral economics research.

"Retirement services providers must build a bridge between behavior and engagement. At MassMutual, our behavioral communications platform provides just such a bridge," says Sheridan. "MassMutual has committed significant resources to ongoing research and analysis of participant behavior and preferences. The research suggests that a mix of plan design changes and behavioral communications can help put participants on the path to a secure retirement. As a result, we are creating more personalized statements, educational tools, and interactive experiences that are more meaningful," he adds.

"MassMutual is developing participant communications that complement the natural tendencies, attitudes and preferences of retirement savers," explains Salka. "Through the delivery of personalized, relevant information at a variety of touch points, education is interactive and engaging and messages are consistent and easy to act upon."
