Nov 2, 2012
(Springfield, MA) - The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) awarded the 2012 “Excellence in Corporate Practice Award” recipient as Mark Roellig, executive vice president and general counsel for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). The award was presented at the ACC’s Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla., in October.
Established in 1996, the award recognizes an outstanding senior in-house lawyer who has made significant business and legal contributions to the success of their client, including legal advocacy and counseling, service to the legal profession, law department management, and cost control processes.
“This award reflects our Law Department’s commitment to our tradition of excellence and the critical role it plays in proactively supporting and advancing our company’s strategies,” said Roger Crandall, chairman, president and chief executive officer of MassMutual. “We are pleased that Mark is being recognized by the ACC, as it speaks to his leadership and the exceptional work our legal team does each day in providing best-in-class in-house counsel that benefits our business and, most importantly, our policyholders.”
“Mark personifies excellence,” stated ACC’s President & CEO Veta T. Richardson. “He has been a champion for innovative fee arrangements, led his team to successes in litigation management, and developed effective diversity and pro bono initiatives that have become business imperatives for MassMutual.”
Under his leadership, the Patent Initiative Program was launched and the law department’s use of alternative fee arrangements have grown significantly, the Dispute Resolution team has been recognized as a leader in litigation management, and the department has implemented a document management system, matter management and electronic billing system to help ensure optimal efficiency. In efforts with diversity, Roellig and his team developed and implemented a successful four-step diversity: creating the environment, building the brand, developing the pipeline and hiring, and developing and promoting. He also oversees a strong pro bono program and has most recently committed MassMutual to $15,000 and additional volunteer support for the Hampden County Legal Clinic.
“It is such an honor to be recognized by the Association of Corporate Counsel, especially among so many impressive and deserving industry colleagues and previous award recipients,” said Mark Roellig, executive vice president and general counsel at MassMutual and the 2012 Excellence in Corporate Practice Award recipient. “Although I am the recipient, this award is truly the result of the work and accomplishments of the many talented individuals and teams of professionals whom I have had the privilege of leading, working and partnering with throughout my career.” Roellig’s innovative practices, advancement of business objectives, and achievements in service to the in-house profession are a testament to his commitment to public service and civic and community contributions.
