Corporate Responsibility

Corporate responsibility and community involvement are important components of how we operate our organization. We believe that doing business the right way, that continually working to make good decisions, results in a long-term prosperity that benefits our people, planet, communities and culture. This fundamental belief drives our business strategy and operating principles, and is a part of the fabric of our organization.

At MassMutual we empower our own people with the necessary knowledge, tools and support to plan for a happy and healthy life at home, at work and out in their communities.

    Volunteers in Action
This home-office program encourages the volunteer efforts of our full-time employees and retirees by awarding grants on their behalf to eligible non-profit organizations to which they donate their time and talent. Individuals can apply for a $750 grant for the non-profit organization with which they volunteer. Each year, a Volunteer in Action grant recipient is recognized with the “Winner's Circle Award for Community Involvement” based on their exemplary and extraordinary commitment to their volunteer cause. A second grant, of $2,000, is made to the award winner’s volunteer organization.

    Community Service Awards
MassMutual’s annual Community Service Awards program recognizes the selfless hours of volunteer time that members of our sales force put in during the year to improve their respective communities. Annually, MassMutual distributes $125,000 to eligible non-profit organizations based on the volunteer efforts and the commitment of the MassMutual financial professionals who work with them. Since the program’s inception in 1996, MassMutual has contributed more than $1 million to charitable organizations across the country.

    Community Activities
We encourage employees to become involved in their communities by providing time away from work for company-sponsored volunteer activities within our Community Responsibility focus areas of education, economic development and community vitality. Company-sponsored volunteer activities include our work with the United Way, Junior Achievement, Habitat for Humanity and various Career Pathways initiatives. Through the Law Division’s pro bono program, volunteer lawyers and paralegals donate their time to provide representation to indigent clients at the Springfield Housing Court.

    Employee Wellness
In the home office, Employee Health Services offers employees access to on-site medical professionals and services, such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol screenings, workstation ergonomic reviews, smoking-cessation resources, stress management courses, personal health seminars and Wellness Activity Centers supporting fitness. Our “Live Healthy Live Well” program continues to offer eligible employees, agents and their spouses or domestic partners a confidential, online wellness assessment, as well as additional incentives and proactive steps to address their health and wellness needs.

    Winners Circle
In 2012, another 146 employees were welcomed into the Winners Circle, a program that recognizes employees for excellence in service and leadership, as well as for commitment to volunteer work in our communities. These awards all share a foundation in our Winning Ways, the behaviors we expect all our employees to demonstrate every day – Focus on the Customer, Act with Integrity, Value People, Work Collaboratively, and Achieve Results.

    Matching Gifts
We recognize the generosity of our eligible employees, agents and company directors by matching their charitable donations to qualified non-profit organizations, providing up to $1 million in matching gift support annually.

    Food, Coats and Toys
Employees are provided opportunities to become involved in the communities where they live and work, through participation in events such as the annual United Way campaign or as volunteers in area schools. Collection drives to support those in need are another way employees can support Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut communities. Community Responsibility manages a food drive, coat drive and holiday toy drive annually. Internal committees are formed and employee volunteers donate their time managing daily collections. Since inception, over 6,000 employees, including those from Babson Capital Management LLC, have participated in supporting these events.
